i search for him, the one who taught me how to live and love and laugh. feliz dia de los papis to the best dad on the planet.
life, lately
June 20, 2009

has swept me across the dance floor in the most incredible way. there has been talk of the most inspiring story, of love-drenched photos, of a puppy tragedy we won’t soon get over and of something, of something so powerful i haven’t felt in nearly a decade. there has been little sleep, missed photos, missed work-outs and missed meals. my eyes burn, my head pounds and my stomach aches with a new kind of happy.

if i could fly to portland tonight and fill your house with peonies (the giant, pink ones from the farm that brightened up your wedding day) i would. te quiero mucho y estoy contigo, amiga.

they are igniting. thanks to jose and how much he’s inspired me to aim high these last few months. with things like this. and this. and especially this. half the stuff he says about photography still flies right over my head, but that’s ok. i have big plans and i don’t plan to stop until i get there.
christian, the terror

there was jose, who cracked my head open after toppling the red wagon i was riding in when i was 5 years old. next came alby, who shaved her eyebrows off and ran away from home only to be found wandering alone five miles later near an uncle’s house — all before first grade. then there was davey, who must have been six when he placed a pillow over watermelon’s pet bird and proceeded to sit on it until his feathery victim stopped chirping. with close to 50 cousins in the family, we thought we’d seen it all. then christian was born.

came to town. and as if her presence wasn’t enough, there was a feast of risotto, angel hair pasta, fettuccini, tiramisu and this giant tower of ice cream cake, vanilla mousse and strawberries soaked in three different kinds of cognac.

on her last day
June 1, 2009

she woke up early to make her atol de elote. she said her arm ached, her knees hurt, her eyes burned and her head pounded. the truth is she didn’t want to leave. several years ago my mom applied to make my grandma a permanent resident. that way she won’t have to return to el salvador every six months. but the paperwork has taken much longer than we thought. so today, we once again drove her to the airport and sadly waived good-bye, hopefully for the last time.

she got a puppy. and of all the names she could have chosen, what did this 7-year-old kid pick? princess honey bunch.
